EMERGENCY TRAINING AND RESPONSE
Behavioral health staff are trained to effectively implement evidence-based prevention and intervention in schools with strengths-based and developmentally and culturally competent services.  We have clear protocols and supervision for handling students’ severe problems and crises (suicidal ideation, psychosis, abuse/neglect, and mental health emergencies). A behavioral health emergency is a potentially life threatening situation in which an individual is imminently threatening harm to self or others, severely disoriented or out of touch with reality, has a severe inability to function, or is otherwise distraught and out of control.
Examples of a l Health Emergency may include:
  • Suicidal thoughts, plans or threats
  • Homicidal thoughts, plan or threats
  • Self-injury needing immediate medical attention
  • Exhibiting acute onset of psychosis or exhibiting severe thought disorganization.
  • Highly erratic or unusual behavior that indicates very unpredictable behavior and/or an inability to care for themselves.
Action Plan protocol may include:
  • The school based therapist completing an onsite crisis screening evaluation with the student and parent.
  • The student and parent coming to a CA clinic or local ER for a crisis screening evaluation.
  • The school staff calling 911 if unable to safely transport or the person is out of control or is severely impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • The school staff calling the CA Crisis line at 1-800-844-2066 which has emergency screeners available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
